Culture & History
| A realisation of the 'Arabian Nights'! Thirty centuries of
culture at the crossroads of Roman, Berber and Arab civilisations,
Morocco is rich in history. At the same time, turn a corner
and you are at once in a provincial French setting with wide
boulevards and cafes, ordering in French and conversing in Arabic!
The French colonial legacy blends easily with the exoticism
of this historically important Islamic land.

The enduring fascination of this kingdom to the traveller
began hundreds of years ago, from the sensual intensity of mysterious
Marrakech to the imperial grandeur of Fes. Sultans playing out
their passions have left the visitor with an immense and diverse
playground of past royal grandeur.
|
| Much of Morocco remains a beautiful vision through a prism
of the Golden Age of Islamic expansion, allowing a diversity
of cultural influences to sit easily throughout the Kingdom.
This is reflected in the complexity of languages in use, setting
this country apart from other North African neighbours.

The Idrissids were the first recognisable Moroccan dynasty,
resulting in the establishment of Fes, a city which became the
main link between Spain and the East, the Maghreb and Sub Saharan
Africa. The ascendancy of the two great Berber dynasties of
the Middle Ages, the Almoravids and the Almohads, saw Morocco
rise to pre-eminence in the Islamic world. Their achievements
and legacy are a powerful component of the Moroccan consciousness
of nationhood that has remained beyond French colonial rule,
which ended in 1956. |
A truly cosmopolitan people who have welcomed and watched
travellers come and go for centuries. Anyone visiting the country
today cannot fail to be awoken to this fascinating and culturally
rich country.
